Read the passage. Marshall faced opposition even within the African American community. Some said that America was not ready for desegregation. “If you challenge ‘separate but equal,’” they said, “we might lose even what we have already gained.”
Others supported Marshall. “We want our rights now, not a century hence,” they said.
