How is the literacy rate of a country related to its standerd of living?

In America our schooling system is unbelievably bad. We teach the unrelated and ignore those you need one on one help. But in America, if you are taught the basics and the standard things that these obscene  public schools then you have some class. But if you aren't capable of reading or understanding the basics you won't be able to comprehend some things small children can. Understanding how to read and write is the basis for discovery and for achieving things that require such ordeals.
