long before our enemies surrendered, the foundations had been laid on which to continue this unity in the peace to come. the atlantic meeting in 1941 and the conferences at casablanca, quebec, moscow, cairo, tehran, and dumbarton oaks each added a stone to the structure. early in 1945, at yalta, the three major powers broadened and solidified this base of understanding. there fundamental decisions were reached concerning the occupation and control of germany. there also a formula was arrived at for the interim government of the areas in europe which were rapidly being wrested from nazi control. this formula was based on the policy of the united states that people be permitted to choose their own form of government by their own freely expressed choice without interference from any foreign source. at potsdam, in july 1945, marshal stalin, prime ministers churchill and attlee, and i met to exchange views primarily with respect to germany. as a result, agreements were reached which outlined broadly the policy to be executed by the allied control council. at potsdam there was also established a council of foreign ministers which convened for the first time in london in september. the council is about to resume its primary assignment of drawing up treaties of peace with italy, rumania, bulgaria, hungary, and finland. in addition to these meetings, and, in accordance with the agreement at yalta, the foreign ministers of great britain, the soviet union, and the united states conferred together in san francisco last spring, in potsdam in july, in london in september, and in moscow in december. these meetings have been useful in promoting understanding and agreement among the three governments. based on this excerpt, how would you describe the relationship between the united states and the soviet union at this time? write your response in 50–75 words.

Although the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union was friendly during the time of World War two, the Soviet Union and the US were allied during World War two, based on the common aim of defeating Nazi Germany. this is because their alliance was essential to defeating Nazi Germany, as the US and Great Britain both needed a strong power at the eastern frontiers of Germany to secure Nazi defeat. At this point in the war, it was beneficial for both the soviet union and the united states to enter into an alliance with each other since the Soviet Union was under attack by the Nazis, and the United States and its allies needed another strong ally. it seems like both countries had trouble accepting the ideology of the other, as they each had completly different political policies and types of governments, but were trying to attempt accepting each other for the sake of defeating the Nazis and ending the war on the European frontier. This relationship between the two nations, and the shared sacrifices, eventually led to the end of world two in the western frontier as Germany was drained on both fronts. This relationship that was based on benefit would end the war, as the two nations will have different opinions regarding postwar issues.

the first migration was the early neolithic period -- 6,000 before common era (bce) -- when the first farmers, from anatolia -- asia minor -- spread through europe. the second migration occurred during the early bronze age (3,000-2,500 bce) when the so-called "steppe population," from the eurasian steppe, replaced much of northern europe's previous population.

the first farmers of northern and western europe passed through southeastern europe with limited hunter-gatherer genetic admixture, which occurs when two or more previously isolated populations begin interbreeding. however, some groups that remained mixed extensively -- without the male-biased, hunter-gatherer admixture that prevailed later in the north and west, according to latest discoveries. southeastern europe continued to be a nexus between east and west, with intermittent genetic contact with the steppe people up to 2,000 years before the migrations that replaced much of northern europe's population.

"in some places, hunter-gatherers and incoming farmers seem to have mixed very quickly," says iain mathieson, a geneticist at the university of pennsylvania, who was first author of the paper. "but, mostly, the two groups remained isolated, at least for the first few hundred years. these hunter-gatherers had been living there for thousands of years, and it must have been quite a shock to have these new people show up -- with a completely different lifestyle and appearance."
