Prior to becoming a civil rights activist and politician, John Lewis wanted to be a preacher.

John Lewis was a civil rights activist, congressman, and a prominent leader of the Civil rights era. He was also a "Freedom Rider" and led the "Bloody Sunday" march.

Ever since he was a child, John Lewis wanted to be a preacher. He would imitate preaching and  by the age of 5, he preached in front of their chickens. His first experience preaching in front of people was at the age of 15. Despite living during the racial discrimination period, he hardly had any exposure to such racism until he listened and became inspired by the sermons of Martin Luther King.

He would later become so involved in the racism issue and would take part in many of the demonstrations and protests of his people, the black people.  Attending a theological institute helped him learn more about non-violent protests, but also led to many of his arrests for his involvement in many demonstrations.
