Why did some carpetbaggers come to south

in the history of the united states, carpetbagger was a derogatory term applied by former confederates to any person from the northern united states who came to the southern states after the american civil war; they were perceived as exploiting the local populace.

the tariff was created to protect industry in the northern part of the united states. industries in the north were being driven out of business by imported goods that were priced at a low rate. the goal was to protect these industries   by taxing the goods.
