1) The domestication of the Camel was key to the development of trade in Western African empires. Camels made it possible for these kingdoms to exchange gold and metal ornaments, along with other goods, through the Saharan desert in exchange for goods like copper, salt, and textiles. Prior to the use of this animal, trade was very small.2a) Prior to the isolationism policy adopted by these 2 countries, there was a high level of unregulated trade, as well as piracy. European influence was starting to become relevant due to commerce. As a response to this, the Japanese governing body at the time: "The Tokugawa shogunate", enforced the "Sakoku" or isolationism policy. Trade with Europe was practically banned. However, commerce between China and Japan remained open. 2b) Chinese and Japanese society became widely alienated with major events and tendencies that were occurring in the world. This also meant that many technological innovations, like the steam engine, were introduced to these countries many years later. Both countries had their own policies but were ultimately forced to trade with western nations. This opened both countries markets to the rest of the world.
