a. When public services are not available to citizens, they are not able to get what they need. And therefore the country becomes overcrowded with people who don't have jobs.

b. This started because people thought the city was beautiful and so they made tall beautiful buildings to attract people. They also wanted to start building up rather than out.

c. In the late 1800s, people in many parts of the world decided to leave their homes and immigrate to the United States. Fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famine, many came to the U. S. because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity.

d.  The rapid growth caused cities to have a lack of housing and thus overcrowded housing, unsanitary conditions, polluted water, easy dispersion of disease, increased crime rate, and fires from the new housing being made of wood and the use of kerosene heaters.

e. City governments improved sanitation with new sewage and water purification systems. Cities also hired full-time firefighters and police officers.
