Paul in this passage is saying that Jesus's followers ought to work to support others.  He is saying that he has helped the weak and so must them.  But not only that he goes and states Jesus's own words that we must give.  When you are working for the weak you are giving and you will be blessed because of it.

For example giving to somone you care for can make you feel good and it would allow you to grow with Christ.
