what are ethos?

Ethos is a word of Greek origin that means "character". Basically, it's the atmosphere or spirit of a certain era or community. People can use this word when describing the spirit of a decade; like the '60s, for example.

Ethos refers to any element of an argument that is meant to appeal to an audience's ethics or ethical responsibilities.

the narrator is saying that the old lady made her feel uncomfortable. you know this because they say "i found that rather irksome", "perhaps it was her being so upright and trim", and "i don't think it was that, because i thought that quaintly pleasant." hope this !
