He is shaving the captain of a military unit who has to be considered an archenemy for him. The captain imprisoned and killed some of his comrades. The barber is having thoughts of killing the captain by slitting his throat and then to shave his face. However, he does not want to be stained in blood, but instead of that only in lather. In the end when captain leaves he reveals that the barber wanted to kill him and he wanted to check it was true or not.

This was very tempting, as the client was his political opponent, and he was in a vulnerable position. However, he ultimately decides not to do so. He decides that, as a barber, he takes pride in his work, and he will not let blood stain his work ethic and his conscience.
