Adam is a structure built across a river to hold back the river's water. the flow of water through a dam is controlled by gates. when the gates are closed, water is held at a greater height than it would otherwise occupy. the water has options: kinetic, chemical and gravitational potential energy when the gates are closed due to its height. this energy is transformed into options: kinetic, chemical, and gravitational potential energy when the gates open and the water begins to flow downward.

Explanation: Gravitational potential energy is energy stored in an object due to the object's height. Gravitational potential energy can be transformed into kinetic energy as the object loses its height and gains speed. Under ideal conditions, although an object's potential and kinetic energy may change, the total amount of mechanical energy it possesses does not change.  

The water has gravitational potential energy when the gates are closed due to its height. This energy is transformed into kinetic when the gates open and the water begins to flow downward.
