Compare the words stern and yearns. how are they alike? how are the different?

Stern means very serious in discipline or assertion of authority and yearns mean a strong feeling of need and longing of something more particularly for something one has lost. They both indicate the element of need and desire / wish which makes them alike while their difference is that one is related to the discipline while the other with want and desire.
