the definition of hit or miss is a term used to describe something that might be good sometimes and bad others, especially when you cannot predict when it will be good or bad.

to hit or miss on something, is pretty much having an idea, but   to know if it will work out right is hard to say, you just have to try and see what happens; if it does work, it was a hit, but if it doesn't work, it was a miss.
