Over three days in early May 1963, African American children of all ages left school to march through the streets of Birmingham, Alabama. Nine-year-old Audrey Faye Hendricks was among the youngest of about 2,000 children to participate in the Children’s Crusade. The students hoped to raise awareness about Black citizens efforts to integrate the city. Audrey was arrested and spent five nights in jail.
