The Requerimiento was a written declaration of sovereignty and war that the Spanish read out, which was basically stating that they ruled parts they conquered in the Americas. This was because they believed that the Spanish monarchy was divine and was sent by God to rule over the Americas. For the Spaniards, it was effective, as they went ahead and did what they thought the document entailed, which was conquering, enslaving and converting indigenous peoples.
