Dr. blakemore argues that the use of animals is utilitarian. what does he mean by this?

Utilitarianism is an ethical theory which states that the useful is the good and that the best action is the one that increases and probably maximises utility. In more detail, according to utilitarianism, the aim of an action should be the biggest possible balance of pleasure over pain or the greatest happiness of the greatest number. Dr Blakemore is a neurobiologist who often advocates the use of animal in research and science. In his point of view, the use of animals is utilitarian, because it has been proven useful, by increasing our understanding of our biology and advancing our medical science. Also, it can be characterized as utilitarian because the suffering of a few (animals used in experiments) increases the welfare and health of more.
