Cortes and his men marched to the island city which was the Aztec capital. The Spanish saw much gold, silver, and riches. The Spanish conquered the Aztec empire, and Mexico became a Spanish colony in 1521. Cortes became the governor of the colony.

In 1523, Cortes sent another Spanish leader to Central America. This man and his conquistadores (Spanish soldiers) conquered the Maya and other Indian tribes in Central America. Central America became a Spanish colony also.

Other Spanish adventurers explored areas of what is now the United States. In 1536, Francisco de Coronado marched north from Mexico. He explored the southwest region of the United States in search of the "Seven Golden Cities of Cibola." Coronado was looking for gold. He was disappointed to find the "Seven Cities of Cibola" were Zuni Indian villages made from mud bricks instead of gold.

In 1539, Hernando De Soto landed in Florida. He marched his men westward. De Soto was looking for gold, too. He found none. He was, however, the first European to see the Mississippi River. He claimed all of the land drained by the Mississippi for Spain.
