Why might it have been a bad idea for Diocletian to split the Roman Empire into two halves in A. D. 285? 1. The western empire eventually grew stronger than the east, making it susceptible to barbarian invasions.

2. In the short term, the division made the Empire more easily governable.

3. The western half spoke Latin, while the eastern half spoke Greek.

4. Over time, the east and western halves failed to adequately work together to combat outside threats, and the two often competed for resources.
