In 1850, Congress was debating how to handle slavery in the new territories within the Mexican Cession. They come up with a few ideas including: Wilmot Proviso - ban slavery in the new territories*
Legalize slavery in the new territories
Extend the Missouri Compromise line westward across the new territories
Popular sovereignty - let the settlers in the new territories decide for themselves
The Compromise of 1850 - CA is a free state, NM & UT can choose, the slave trade is illegal in Washington, D. C., the Fugitive Slave Act is in effect, part of TX goes to NM in exchange for payment.
You are a Congressman in 1850 who wants to end slavery. Which option will you support and why? Consider the consequences of your decision and include what you think will happen as a result of your decision. Write a paragraph clearly stating your stance and explain.

*Keep in mind that if you choose to ban slavery, then the South will likely leave the Union and make their own country where slavery will be legal, and you will not be able to stop slavery there. So, if you choose this option, be sure to explain how you will deal with this new issue as well.

You may choose one of the options above (explain it and why you chose it) or come up with your own option (and clearly explain it).
