Identify the fourteen principles of democracy and explain why these would not be principles of an authoritarian government.

1. All members of societies have equal rights and responsibilities.  

2. Citizens have the right and duty to participate in activities concerning national interests such as voting, debating issues, attending assemblies or community meetings, paying taxes, protesting, etc.  

3. Democracy implements political tolerance. Although the majority rules, the rights of the minority and absent members are protected.  

4. Leaders or government officials are appointed through an election process are accountable to the people, thus must be responsible for their actions. Their interests should serve the public and not themselves.  

5. Government transparency is acquired by giving the press and the people the right to freedom of expression and information.  

6. Elections are held regularly, freely, and fairly.  

7. Democracy sets law against corrupt government officials who use public funds for their own benefit.  

8. Democracy limits the power of government and protects the people against abuse of power through bill of rights.  

9. Democracy relies on the peaceful acceptance and transfer of power from one party to the next as soon as election results are out.  

10. Freedom of expression, of assembly, of association, and the right to equality and education are the human rights of citizens in a democratic country.  

11. Democracy follows due process of law. It insists that the law be equal, fair, and enforced consistently. No one is above the law.  

12. A multi-party system or permission to have more than one political party allows voters to vote candidates according to their parties, policies, and platforms. 

13. Economic democracy decentralizes economic power.  

14. Democratic societies reflect the nation’s social, political, and cultural life with fundamental principles

All these principles are contrary to the concept of an authoritarian government. It exercises political repression and suppresses people from any opposition. Authority and power is highly centralized, ruled by a ruling party or a one-party state. There is no free voting or election from the people because leaders are often self-appointed. Those in power have the wealth and control over the country. 

The fourteen principles of democracy include accountability, transparency, limited government, majority rule with minority rights, etc.

The other principles of democracy include the following:

Economic freedom;Control of Abuse of Power;Equality;Individual Rights;Independent Judiciary;Competing Political Parties;The rule of law;Accepting the Results of Elections;Regular Free and Fair Elections;Citizen Participation;

The fourteen principles of democracy listed above would not be principles of an authoritarian government because an authoritarian government is against all these principles in practice.

Authoritarian government is characterized by a strong central power to keep and maintain the political status quo and reduce the rule of law, with no separation of powers and democratic election.

Hence, in this case, it is concluded that the principles of an authoritarian government do not correlate with the authoritarian government.
