During the first thirteen years of marriage, Henry and Eleanor had eight children. However, in 1171 they disagreed over his extramarital affairs, which eventually imprisoned her in 1173 because she had supported the revolt of her sons Henry, Richard and Godfred against him. Eleonor was only released on July 6, 1189, when her husband died and her second son Richard the Lionheart ascended the throne of England.
As queen mother, Eleonor acted as regent of England and Normandy when Ricardo left for the Third Crusade, having negotiated the ransom of this one when it was arrested in Austria.
