A boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico started shortly after Texas joined the States in 1846.  America wanted the border to run along the Rio Grande and declared war on Mexico which continued for more than a year.

In February 1848, the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidaldo was signed. The treaty recognized Texas as a U.S. state and gave a large piece of land that belonged to Mexico to the States. The cost of this purchase was 15 million dollars. The ceded land would become later California, Nevada, Utah and some parts of Arizona.
