Supporters of using the atomic bomb against Japan believed it would save American lives.

The atomic bombs were dropped in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 1945. The United States entered WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was known that dropping an atomic bomb would completely destroy the cities, killing many people and leaving many severely injured. Nevertheless, many though that all the destruction and death would be worth it. Americans knew that the Japanese wouldn't forfeit easily. If the bombs were not dropped, the war would continue and possibly more people would have been killed. Therefore, dropping the bomb was seen as a way to stop the war, and save the lives of many Americans, that otherwise, would have had no choice but to fight and probably die. Russia had also been working on developing an atomic bomb and the war in Europe was practically after D-Day which was on June 6, 1944.
