Why did freedom from soviet rule lead to ethnic fighting in many former soviet satellites

Freedom from Soviet rule helped to fuel fighting amongst ethnic groups in former Soviet satellite nations because these states developed a power vacuum whereby differences and underlying conflicts between groups now had no authority to help prevent further bloodshed.
