MODERN WORLD GEOGRAPHY – SHORT ANSWER QUESTION Directions: Use the sources below to answer the statement that follows. Use complete sentences; an outline or bulleted list alone is not acceptable.

Source: This is an excerpt from Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech that was delivered September 28, 1948, in Paris, France. The speech was titled, “Struggles for Human Rights.”

I have come this evening to talk with you on one of the greatest issues of our time—that is the preservation of human freedom... I have chosen to discuss this issue in Europe because this has been the scene of the greatest historical battles between freedom and tyranny.

Concern for the preservation and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms stands at the heart of the United Nations. The United Nations has made it clear that it intends to uphold human rights and to protect the dignity of the human personality. In the preamble to the Charter the keynote is set when it declares: “We the people of the United Nations determined...to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and ... to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.”

We must not be confused about what freedom is. Basic human rights are simple and easily understood: freedom of speech and a free press; freedom of religion and worship; freedom of assembly and the right of petition; the right of men to be secure in their homes and free from unreasonable search and seizure and from arbitrary arrest and punishment

How does Eleanor Roosevelt view Human RIghts? Do you agree? Use one piece of evidence from the text to support your answer. (P- Point E- Evidence E- Explanation L- Link/Conclusion

And whereas our provinces in north america, have been frequently ravaged by indian enemies, more especially that of south-carolina, which in the late war, by the neighboring savages, was laid waste with fire and sword and great numbers of english inhabitants, miserably massacred, and our loving subjects who now inhabit them, by reason of the smallness of their numbers, will in case of a new war, be exposed to the late calamities; inasmuch as their whole southern frontier continueth unsettled, and lieth open to the said savages. and whereas we think it highly becoming our crown and royal dignity, to protect all our loving subjects, be they ever so distant from us; to extend our fatherly compassion even to the meanest and most unfortunate of our people, and to relieve the wants of our above mentioned poor subjects; and that it will be highly conducive for accomplishing those ends, that a regular colony of the said poor people be settled and established in the southern territories of carolina."- from  charter of georgia, 1732 based on the passage, it can be determined that the main reason the king of england wishes to establish a new southern colony is becausea)he wants to provide a safe haven for all of his loyal british subject'sb)he wants to protect the fathers of each family in order to keep them safe. c)he wants to make sure there will be enough soldiers in the event of another war. d)he wants to use the new colony to protect the other colonies from attack
