Item 5
Read the paragraph from "Why We Buy What We Buy."
Twitchell, in the Wal-Mart, peers at a barrel displaying kitchen floor mats. "Two for five dollars!" he says, reading a sign. It is clearly tempting. But he pulls himself away to note that people are starting to use the things they buy to advertise themselves. Suppose, for instance, that all brands of scooter are pretty much the same. But advertisements suggest that only really cool people use a certain brand of scooter. You insist on buying that cool brand: you want people to think you must be cool because you have the cool scooter.
How does this paragraph contribute to the overall idea that advertisers know how to appeal to buyers' emotions?
It reinforces the idea that people are happiest when they buy products at bargain prices.
It shows advertisers spend time researching how people make decisions about what to buy.
It explains advertisements make people believe that what they buy represents who they are.
It proves that people make decisions about what to buy based on the need to be like everyone else.
