Why was it important for the South to maintain an equal balance in the Senate?

The balance of free and slave states in the senate was such an important issue because if the either had an advantage it would only help to trigger a war that was yet to come.

It was important because if there was another free/slave state the balance of power would shift in the Senate (and would most likely affect the house as well)
