Daniel Shay led the Shays rebellion, which was a rebellion against debt collection, as many of the farmers were poor and could not afford to pay their debts. Their goal was to destroy the documents that hold their debts, as well as acquire items of value to sustain their livelihood.

Daniel Shays rebelled against the government because of heavy taxes. All the states had to pay their war debt and Massachusetts decided to do this by collection taxes. As a farmer, Shays was hit hard by the taxes. He decided to revolt against the government for the high taxes and heavy debt.
