Make sure your needs are met each month before the fun stuff.  i.e. your rent is paid, utilities taken care of, mobile bill up to date, enough money for groceries for the month, transportation taken care of…  Plan for your future. Put $100. 00 in a savings account each month and don’t spend it.  Have a rainy day fund for unexpected expenses.  Set aside money for hanging out with friends and make it last for the month. Try and strictly use cash. It is easy to go over budget with a debit card.  Credit Card(s): If you have to carry a balance, keep it small enough to pay off in two months. It isn’t free money but it seems that way. Getting into debt is a good way to stall your progress in life.  Visit with friends and family. Sure you have your independence, but that doesn’t mean you cast off your connections. Now you get to be a guest at home, embrace it. Invite friends and family to your digs. One caveat, that means keeping your place clean. If you are not sure how clean it should be, think about it this way, if your mom came over and she started cleaning straight away, you have some tidying to do.  Volume levels. If you don’t want to hear your neighbours or your landlord, keep our noise to an acceptable level and don’t give them an excuse to call in the artillery (playing their music louder or getting the cops involved.) Especially if you come home drunk or stoned. Are you getting home safe in those states of being?  Get to know your neighbours. Share your likes and dislikes, favourite music, movies and games.  Enjoy your pad. Personalize it. Take pictures for posterity. This is the first place you moved to and it probably won’t be the last.
