Difference between steppes and taiga

Steppes are non-treed, or dominantly non-treed (valley bottoms often are treed) semi-arid areas that experience cold winters and support grasses and other perennials. Taiga has become an ambiguous term; some have equated it to the circumpolar boreal forest (however, ‘boreal forest’ is sufficient) while others consider it to be the transition zone between the northernmost boreal tree line and the beginning of tundra, or the alpine tree line and the tundra higher up on mountains. Where taiga is used to refer to the transitional boreal-tundra region, it is understood to comprise a patchy distribution of conifers growing upon tundra with non-treed surrounding tundra.

Tundra in general is heavily vegetated landscape containing bryophytes.
