Read text then complete chart. Underlined words are glossed or defined at end of article. The Geography of Rome Italy is a peninsula that is shaped like a boot. It is protected on the north by the Alps. These mountains provided a natural barrier to discourage invasions. The Apennine Mountains, which run north to south, divide the region into two different sections. The western side has rich fertile land; the eastern side is rocky and hilly. Because of the quality of land the people who lived on the eastern side were usually poor while the western coast had more wealth. The best harbors were located at the southern end on the western side. These harbors made it easy to trade with Spain, Gaul (France) and Great Britain. Important metals such as iron, copper, tin, gold and silver were exported to these and other trade partners. Building materials such as stone and timber were also easily available Italy has moderate climate rarely experiencing extreme hot or cold temperatures, providing a long growing season. The peninsula also had natural resources such as timber and stone for buildings.
