How did americans establish governments as they went from british colonies to independant states

They had the First Continental Congress. They mustered ideas on how they would self govern after the break from Britain. So after many different meetings they created the first system of our country. The Articles of Confederation. Which gave states more power than the central/federal government. Which was soon destroyed and then the Constitution became the governing document.
