The Human Development Index or HDI is (simply put) a metric that is used to categorize countries based on the quality of life of the population. The HDI takes measurements on different aspects of the population, such as:
Life of living
Life expectancy is how long a child born in the country is expected to live on average in said country. Contributing factors to low ranking in this index may include:
lack of basic medical servicesPoor access to basic and higher educationLow wages, high pricesWidespread inequality.
Stimulating the local economy is one way to seek a higher HDI ranking. One way this can be done is by improving working conditions and minimum wages for the lower and middle class. This can lead to an increased flow of currency within the country and more competitive prices as a result of higher demand, culminating in a higher standard of living.
Calculated investments can further contribute towards an increased HDI. Given that the HDI takes into account factors like education and life expectancy, strategic investments in various forms of education ranging from small local schools to respected universities, along with increased spending in health programs available to all economic classes, are sure to positively impact HDI ranking. Targeted investments towards social development and economic assistance for the lower class can also be used to improve the standard of living.
All of these steps must be taken by the government. For this reason, if a country has historically maintained a low HDI, it can be logical to assume that the government is to blame. If a certain government refuses to acknowledge and address the problems at hand, a government reform through democratic means may be necessary.
Due to the HDI's measurement system based on the quality of life and education of the country, some effective ways to improve this ranking are economic stimulation and calculated investments. These methods require cooperative leadership for which a governmental reform may be necessary.
