At the historic March on Washington, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired us to “make real the promises of democracy,” sharing his dream that his children “will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Fifty years later, the unfinished business of realizing racial equality stands starkly illuminated in the wake of the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin.  Many in communities of color understand that discrimination and oppression have persisted over the past 50 years, right alongside the civil and human rights victories of the past decades, including the election of the first African-American president. Now the spotlight focused on the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case has illuminated the stark outlines of structural racism at work.  

Here is the challenging truth: The same systems that disadvantage and marginalize African-Americans confer privileges on the white middle class, privileges that are hard for those who benefit to see or acknowledge.
