One of them was surprised to hear that the other had been cherishing a romantic feeling for so long without expressing it.  Perhaps, the surprised party had waited for the disclosure for too long.  The news only came out when, most likely, she is hooked to another man.  This non-disclosure can cause relationships to cool off.  Women are most likely to feel disgruntled and let down, if a man had been nursing a long-lasting relationship feeling without showing or voicing it out.
