Missouri also wanted to apply for statehood, but they were questioning whether Missouri should become a free or slave state. The settlers who moved to Missouri practiced slavery, and when applying for statehood, they wanted to become a slave state. James Tallmadge disagreed with this philosophy, and he said Missouri can become state unless if they get rid of slavery there and become a slave state. Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise in 1820, which says that Maine will become a free state and Missouri will become a slave state. In addition, anything below the 36 degree 30'N latitude line will allow slavery and anything to the north will be a free state. There was already a balance between slave and free states before the Missouri Compromise, but this compromise still kept that balance. Congress passed the Missouri Compromise in 1820. Future states Missouri and Maine joined the Union. Now, Missouri and Maine joined the Union as states.
