What do you like about democracy?

What are your dislikes?

Populism.

Where right or wrong, when a majority of the population want it, it’s done!

This comes to me as both an observer to National Politics and also being part of my College’s political hierarchy.

One of the biggest struggles in democracy is to be champion for what is right over what is wanted.

For example: Take the Brexit referendum. It was shown that majority of the voters in support of Brexit were the older generation who were either retirees or going to retire soon, whilst the younger generation strongly opposed Brexit and they will be the ones taking the brunt of it.

Now it is evident that in that particular case, just because the older population were in support of Brexit, it tilted towards their side.

This is arguably the worst problem with democracy.

Take for example. Indonesia and Myanmar. Of the native population a certain religious group tends to be in greater numbers over the minorities.

In situations like this we see that the ruling classes tend to be from the majority groups and it is their want that is imposed on the minority.

Politicians, due to this continue to tilt the tables in favour of the majority group so that they continue to keep the politician in power.

It’s always between what is most rational and what the majority wants, and that hegemony is kept in check by the judicial system and it can be such that sometimes the judiciaries are also dominated by the majority groups and lead to a complete hegemony over the law.

Populism is a growing problem, and it is only going to get worse.
