How did improvements in transportation affect the number of states admitted to the Union?

After the Louisiana Purchase, the US Territory stretched from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains. Transportation was very hard during that time and the Westward expansion through the built of railroads helped settlers to establish new towns and developed new territories and made travel easier.
