The 'Europe' defined by the EU is very relaxed, and not really bound to the European continent or region. It isnt a cultural region as many nations in the EU have different cultures, and as said above, it isnt the physical european region.

The European Union is an intergovernmental and supranational organization whose members are European countries. This international organization works through a combination of supranational and intergovernmental systems. In some fields, decisions are made through deliberation and consensus among member states, and in other fields, supranational organ institutions carry out their responsibilities without the approval of their members. Important organ institutions within the European Union are the European Commission, the European Union Council, the European Council, the European Court, and the European Central Bank. In addition, there is also the European Parliament whose members are directly elected by the member states.

The change of name from "European Economic Community" to "European Community" to "European Union" signifies that this organization has changed from an economic unit to a political entity. This trend is marked by the increasing number of policies in the European Union. The task of convergence aims to allow the affected regions to cooperate with the most prosperous regions in the EU, thereby reducing the economic gap in the European Union. This task covers all European regions which are not covered by the Convergence task.

Regional competition and employment.

With 16% of the EU regional policy budget, the main objective is to create jobs by promoting competition and making the region more attractive to business people and investors. Possible projects are the development of clean transportation, supporting research centers, universities, businesses, and small start-ups, providing training, and creating jobs. Funding is managed through ERDF or ESF.

European territorial cooperation

This task aims to reduce border interests within Europe - both between countries and within countries - by improving regional cooperation. This task allows for three types of cooperation, namely cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation. This task is less important in terms of pure finance, representing only 2.5% of the EU regional policy budget. This task is funded exclusively through ERDF.
