On April 25th, 1846, the Mexican cavalry attacked U.S. soldiers within the disputed zone, and killed roughly a dozen. They then laid siege to an American fort along the Rio Grande, where they they were later defeated at the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de La Palma.
