The prince later became emperor Tenji and launched a series of reforms. He also made Nakatomi, whom he gave the name of Fujiwara, a special minister.

The descendants of Fujiwara managed to secure important positions in successive imperial courts and to marry their daughters with emperors in order to guarantee clan continued influence.
