A hypothesis is the foundation of establishing a fact in the sciences or research based fields. A hypothesis is based on an observation. This can be  from viewing the relationship between two objects or variables.

When the hypothesis is put to a test, and the results observed under  suitable conditions prove the hypothesis to be correct, it becomes a theory.

For a theory to become a fact, several other experiments have to be carried out to rule out other reasons that may yield the same result.
