There seems to a lot confusion regarding Azerbaijan about whether it is located in the Middle East or not. The definite answer is that it is not a country in the Middle East. It lies both in Eastern Europe and Western Asia location. It is surrounded by Caspian Sea, Russia, Iran, Armenia and Georgia.  

Azerbaijan is officially named as the Republic of Azerbaijan and it is in Eurasia in the region of South Caucasus. It gained independence in 1918 and was the biggest Muslim-state, however in 1920, it became part of Soviet Union countries.
