The party split after dissent over who would succeed President Monroe, the Democratic faction were loyal to may old Jeffersonian ideals. The background of this party is said to lie with the "common man", supporting farmers, laborers, religious and/or ethnic minorities, and often favor supporting the poor.

Many support ideas such as universal health care, regular raising of minimum wage, improving public education, and diminishing the use of fossil fuels, equal opportunity, and are pro-immigration.
