The basic structure is federal. This means that there are two constitution's. One at the state level and other at Central level. The Constitution of USA makes it a union of states with rigid boundaries. In the US the state is supreme in all matters except that of national security and foreign policies.

The U.S. Constitution was written to create a better plan for governing the new nation. It replaced the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution was written in 1787 and ratified in 1788. It includes a preamble, seven articles, and 27 amendments to date. The articles are like chapters in a book. Most articles have several sections. The Bill of Rights is the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. An additional 17 amendments have been added since the Constitution’s ratification.

The first three articles describe the structure and functions of the three branches of government. The fourth article describes the powers specific to the government for each state. Article V (Five) explains how Americans can amend, or change, the Constitution. The Supremacy Clause is in Article VI (Six), declaring the Constitution to be the supreme law of the land. Article VII (Seven) is about ratifying, or approving, the Constitution.
