As described by Axtmann (2012), cultural imperialism is a model of power-correlation organization that seeks to homogenize the culture of society. It is a global phenomenon in which powerful industries and economic agents, mainly Westerners, dominate other local, regional and national cultures.

With the advance of globalization, new vehicles for the propagation of cultural imperialism have been created. Supporters of the free expansion of the market economy argue that cultures are fluid, and therefore cultural imperialism turns out to be a "natural" element in the growth of trade. If Western practices and ideas are the most successful, this is due to the belief that these cultural practices are sublime and sophisticated compared to the cultural practices of other nations. Thus, from the perspective of cultural imperialism, the advance of economic progress naturally induces the homogenization of cultures to universal standards.
