Parental notification, in lieu of active parental permission, is allowed when an IRB has approved a waiver of the requirement for parental permission. IRB stands for Institutional Review Board. This board protects the rights and welfare of human subjects., assures that all applicable institutional policies and federal regulations related to research with human subjects are followed and reviews subject recruitment materials and strategies.

In the USA, the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) and Department of Health and Human Services empower IRB to require modifications in research, approve, or reject certain researches that violate human’s rights.
