Project: Create a Community Crime Prevention Plan It is natural to feel concerned and alarm when faced with the possibility of becoming a victim of crime. Rather than facing these fears alone, many groups and communities have joined together to try to prevent crime in their neighborhood. You may have seen street signs that indicate an area designated as a Neighborhood Watch, or even live in one yourself. These organizations empower their members by providing them with information and ways to identify criminal activity.

Assignment
In this assignment, you will put together a community crime prevention program for your own neighborhood. You will research the crimes that are most prevalent in your neighborhood so that you can tailor your plan to best meet the needs of your community. You will then research what other organizations encourage their members to be on the lookout for. You will then use this information to create a specific plan of action that you could give to each member of your community.

To complete this assignment, you will:

View your local police department or sheriff’s department Web site for crime statistics in your area. Alternatively, with the permission of your caregiver, contact your local law enforcement officials to determine the crime statistics in your area.
Conduct an Internet search for credible community groups that advise their members on how to prevent crimes similar to those faced by your community. Good sources are official government Web sites on community crime prevention and programs designed for college and university campuses. Remember to use only credible sources.
Use your research to put together a community-written action plan for your neighborhood or community. The plan should provide information on how to minimize the individual risk of becoming a victim of crime, especially the crimes against a person described in this assignment. It should also be tailored to meet the needs of your community.
You should be able to use maps, graphs, and tables provided through the city or the police department specifically and may be able to accentuate this information with royalty-free non-copyrighted images of your community. Your complete report may be written using a word processing program as well as PowerPoint or other presentation software that can be e-mailed as attachments or saved in an online folder for your instructors and potentially others in your class to review.
To complete your assignment, submit:

a list of relevant crime statistics in your area,
your community crime prevention plan, and
a list of all references used in the assignment.
