1) Consider three different geologic scenarios, each having four horizontal homogeneous, isotropic layers 5 m thick, overlying one another. The difference in each scenario (1-3) is the hydraulic conductivity of the layers: (1)The hydraulic conductivities are 1x10-4, 1x10-6, 1x10-4, and 1x10-6 m/s, respectively.(2)The hydraulic conductivities are 1x10-4, 1x10-8, 1x10-4, and 1x10-8 m/s
(3)The hydraulic conductivities are 1x10-4, 1x10-10, 1x10-4, and 1x10-10 m/s.

(a) Calculate the bulk effective K for the vertical direction for each scenario. Calculate the bulk effective K for the horizontal direction for each scenario. Tabulate the results with three rows and two columns. The rows should be one for each scenario. The first column should contain the bulk effective vertical K for each scenario. The second column should contain the horizontal bulk effective K.

(b) Study your table and answer the following questions. Is the harmonic mean (used for vertical in this example) generally more like the low K or the high K layers? Is the arithmetic mean (used for the horizontal in this example) generally more like the low Kor the high K layers?
