Special relativity has become a fundamental theory in the 20th century and is crucial for explaining many astrophysical phenomena. A central aspect of special relativity is the transformation from one reference frame to another. The following Lorentz transformation matrix gives the transformation from a frame at rest to a moving frame with velocity v along the z-axis:

γ 0 0 γβ
0 1 0 0
0 0 1 0
γβ 0 0 γ

where β = v/c with c being the speed of light in a vacuum, and γ is the Lorentz factor:
γ =
1
p
1 − β
2
(a) State and explain the two traditional postulates from which special relativity originates.
(b) Draw a plot of the Lorentz factor for 0 ≤ β ≤ 0.9 to see how its value changes.
One of the many exciting phenomena of special relativity is time dilation. Imagine astronauts
in a spaceship that is passing by the Earth with a high velocity.
(c) Are clocks ticking slower for the people on Earth or for the astronauts on the spaceship?
(d) How fast must the spaceship travel such that the clocks go twice as slow?

A3030 cmcm wrench is used to loosen a bolt with a force applied 0.30.3 mm from the bolt. it takes 6060 nn to loosen the bolt when the force is applied perpendicular to the wrench. how much force would it take if the force was applied at a 3030 degree angle from perpendicular? a 3030 cmcm wrench is used to loosen a bolt with a force applied 0.30.3 mm from the bolt. it takes 6060 nn to loosen the bolt when the force is applied perpendicular to the wrench. how much force would it take if the force was applied at a 3030 degree angle from perpendicular?

Global warming will produce rising sea levels partly due to melting ice caps but also due to the expansion of water as average ocean temperatures rise. to get some idea of the size of this effect, calculate the change in length of a column of water 1.00 km high for a temperature increase of 1.00ºc. note that this calculation is only approximate because ocean warming is not uniform with depth. (answer in ×10^{-3} −3 m)
